Theatres and Anaesthesia

The Theatre Suite comprises of twelve operating theatres, four of which opened in Summer 2017 as part of £15.1 million development ensuring our facilities remain world class, and two day surgery theatres located in the Menzies Unit. The majority of our patients are admitted via our Baschurch Day Unit.

The Anaesthetic Department consists of 24 consultants and two associate specialists. Trainees visit the department for specialist orthopaedic anaesthesia experience. The department provides a high quality service for all aspects of orthopaedic surgery including for children, and for emergency spinal surgery. We are able to offer a wide variety of anaesthetics (including regional blocks to enable awake surgery) and patients are fully involved in discussions around the benefits and appropriateness of the different anaesthetic choices.

We have a well-established enhanced recovery programme to ensure patients are able to return to their own homes as soon as is safe after their operations. We are also responsible for running the Pre-Operative Assessment service that all patients attend before surgery, for staffing the High Dependency Unit (HDU), and for the management of pain after surgery, which includes two acute pain nurses.

The Theatre Department staff will ensure that all patients are treated with dignity and respect in a safe, informed, professional environment. All our patients will receive individual evidence based care of a high standard in an efficient and timely manner. We believe in the multi-disciplinary team approach.
