Working in Theatres

The Theatre Department

The fast paced, dynamic Theatre Department plays an integral role in ensuring the Trust's vision of aspiring to deliver world class patient care. We believe that the delivery of high-quality healthcare is at the heart of everything we do, while ensuring compassion and respect for our patients as well as each other.

Theatres currently consists of 12 operating theatres with an additional 4 theatres under construction. Our theatre complex includes a ‘barn style’ theatre suite which provides a unique way of working, enhancing a positive working environment while promoting effective team working and optimising patient care.

The team

Our experienced Anaesthetic Team consists of both registered Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) and Anaesthetic Nurses, who work alongside a wider multi-disciplinary team while assisting the Anaesthetists with delivering the highest standard of care to patients undergoing a full range of orthopaedic procedures.

We are a team who pride ourselves with supporting each other and with the added benefit of an extremely supportive and proactive management team, we continue to support each other through the various challenges experienced in healthcare, as well the challenges faced in day-to-day life.

Support and career opportunities

We are keen to support our employees both physically and mentally. In addition to a proactive Occupational Health service, we have key people within the team who are trained Mental Health First Aiders who are experienced at talking with anyone who requires mental health or wellbeing support.

In addition to mental health support, staff can benefit from having access to the Physiotherapy Department who provide employees with musculoskeletal physiotherapy treatment if required.

Within Theatres we are proud to promote an open culture. We currently benefit from having an Anaesthetic Practitioner who we invested in as a trained Freedom to Speak Up representative, allowing our team to speak up if required.

We have a robust practice development Team that consists of both ODPs and Registered Nurses. The Practice Development Team engage with staff to ensure that all development needs are met, including the facilitation of a wide range of courses. Such courses, as well as those previously mentioned, include advanced life support courses.

Another option for Anaesthetic Practitioners is the recently established Anaesthetic Associate (AA) course which has recently provided 2 Anaesthetic Practitioners the opportunity to develop their practitioner role in Anaesthetics. The AA course allows the practitioner to specialise in certain anaesthetic skills which a future career guided by the upcoming General Medical Council regulation.
