Corridor Murals and Benches
When at RJAH, you may have noticed a series of murals alongside benches on the main corridor. The benches are in place to offer comfort and support to patients, visitors and staff as they traverse the corridor.
Thank you to our League of Friends working with sponsors and local charities to make this project possible.
This web page provides more information on each of the murals and why that theme was selected.
1. Our Veterans
The mural allows us to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have served, and the image you see of the soldier pictured, like so many others, found care and healing within these hospital walls.
This piece serves as a tribute to the bravery of our veterans, the tireless dedication of our medical staff over the years, and the lasting remembrance symbolised in every poppy. May we honour the memory of those who gave everything and extend our support to those who continue their journey.
To every veteran and their families, we welcome you to visit the Headley Court Veterans’ Orthopaedic Centre. Our caring team of staff, outreach support members, and volunteers are here to listen, guide, and connect you with the support and resources that feel right for you.
2. Countryside Comfort
Thank you to the League of Friends and Oswestry Show Committee - www.oswestryshow.co.uk - who have generously funded the serene, rural scene and accompanying seating.
Thank you to Grum for providing the images from his collection. Both the image of the cows, taken in Maesbury, and combine harvester, taken in Nescliffe, are local to RJAH.
The images you see depict scenes from our beautiful local area, celebrating our rural essence. We hope the pictures give a glimpse of our surroundings, bring a touch of tranquillity and a connection to nature during your journey.
For patients from rural backgrounds seeking additional support, we encourage you to explore the resources at www.shropshireruralsupport.org.uk.
3. Sustainability
This mural allows you to find out more about the Trust's proactive measures to improve its carbon footprint and build a healthier future for our patients, our planet and generations to come.
The bench is a place where you can pause and reflect on the importance of sustainability, both within the hospital and in the wider community.

4. Friends
The Friends bench is there to offer comfort, connection and understanding. Life can often feel busy, and this bench is here to remind you it’s okay to slow down and take a breath. Whether you just need a quiet moment to yourself, or a chance to share a few words with someone nearby, this space is for you.
Mental health challenges affect many of us, often in silence, and it can be difficult to talk about. It’s important to know that support is always available.
5. One RJAH, Countless Nationalities
This bench is a symbol of unity, belonging, and the strength that comes from embracing our differences and celebrating our hospital’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in everything we do.
The artwork represents the vibrant tapestry of our hospital community, each piece celebrating the unique stories, cultures, and identities that help us create a space where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
If you’d like to learn more about our initiatives, or how you can support equality, diversity, and inclusion, please click here or email rjah.edi.od@nhs.net.
6. Forget Me Not
This bus stop stands as a symbol of quiet moments and everyday routines, a place to rest and a space to pause. For those living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, places like this can become a gentle anchor and a safe familiar place.
Across from our bus stop, forget me not flowers brighten the wall, each flower symbolising love and memories that persist, even when names and faces may fade.
If you, or someone you know has been affected by dementia or Alzheimer’s and would like support, please get in touch with The Alzheimer’s Society today. Visit www.alzheimers.org.uk or call the support line on 0333 150 3456
7. Where’s Percy
Percy the Peacock is having fun with his friends in the woods - we challenge you to spot all of them in the murals.
