Taster of Work
RJAH offer Taster of Work placements in various settings across the hospital. All placements offered are subject to service demands and pressures, and therefore alternative placements may be offered to accommodate.
We can offer placements for students in the following areas:
Ward-based
Administration
Catering
Medical taster for aspiring doctors (16 years and over)
Laboratory research (16 years and over)
Radiology (16 years and over)
Physiotherapy (16 years and over. Only available Tuesday and Wednesday, please email rjah.tasterofwork@nhs.net to book)
Occupational Therapy (16 years and over. Only available Wednesday, please email rjah.tasterofwork@nhs.net to book)
Taster of Work Weeks
Taster of Work Weeks are a great opportunity for school or college students (aged 14 years and over) to experience the working world at RJAH. The programme is designed for those who are considering a career in the NHS to find out more about what it is really like. The week-long programme includes hospital induction, placement in a department (see above list) and employability skills.
The dates for 2026 placements are:
Monday 16 - Friday 20 February
Monday 30 March - Friday 2 April
Monday 18 - Friday 22 May
Monday 22 - Friday 26 June
Monday 29 June - Friday 3 July
Monday 6 - Friday 10 July
Monday 3 - Friday 7 August
If you are interested in undertaking a taster of work placement, please complete an application form which can be found here. You will be required to create an account to fill out the form.
We will be able to offer work placements for ad-hoc dates but these will be limited. Students from local schools will take precedence for placements. All placements will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

The Trust reserves the right to cancel placements at short notice due to service pressures. No placements will be offered to anyone under the age of 14 years old or who is currently a patient at the Trust. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds and with disabilities.
