Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon - Lieutenant Colonel Carl Meyer

 

Lt Col Meyer has a high volume practice in primary hip and knee arthroplasty. In addition to his work at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Lt Col Meyer provides a general trauma service at the neighbouring Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. He has a particular interest in revision hip surgery for dislocation and revision knee surgery for knee instability.

 

Qualified from the University of Birmingham in 1996, Lt Col Meyer then underwent higher orthopaedic training on the Oswestry rotation. He was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at RJAH in 2011. 

 

As well as an NHS surgeon, Lt Col Meyer is a Reserves Army orthopaedic surgeon following his time serving with one tour to Iraq and three to Afghanistan. Has travelled extensively and visited centre's of excellence in the UK and abroad.

 

Lt Col Meyer developed the Veterans Orthopaedic Service in 2014 - the first service of its kind within the UK. It was initially aimed at Veterans with hip and knee arthritis but has now grown to involve other orthopaedic subspecialties. Patients have attended the service from across the UK as well as from overseas.

  • Speciality: Hip and knee arthroplasty and trauma
  • Clinical Interests include: primary hip & knee replacement, complex (post trauma) hip and knee replacement, revision hip and knee surgery, dislocation post THR, instability post TKR and knee arthroscopy.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon - Ioannis Serferlis

Mr. Ioannis Seferlis is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, subspecializing in Hip & Knee Arthroplasty.   

 

He is appointed in the Veterans’ Department, which is unique in the UK.  A Veteran himself, Mr Seferlis served in the Greek Army and now is pleased to provide service mainly to UK Veterans from across the UK and the rest of the world. 

 

He feels privileged to participate in the current development and creation of the upcoming Veterans' Rehabilitation Centre.

Senior Sister for Veterans Outpatients – Liz Reece 

 

Liz is Nurse Manager for outpatient services and veterans. She is the lead for the clinical nursing team and works closely with Armed Forces Outreach Coordinator Sarah Kerr. 

 

Liz has been at RJAH since 1998 in various roles before joining Lt Col Meyer in 2014 at the veteran's orthopaedic service, and she helped design clinical rooms in Headley Court. 

Senior Physiotherapist - Rob Fox 

 

Rob has worked at the trust since 2004 and in 2008 he became the Inpatient Rehab Specialist Physiotherapist working for all the consultants across the trust. Treatment includes both hydro and gym-based therapy. The Veteran's service has been using this service since it was established in 2014 maximizing patient outcomes both pre- and post- surgery. This has become an integral part of patient care across the veteran's service, allowing patients to access high standards of rehabilitation.  

 

Rob has a strong connection to the Military as his grandfather served as a rear gunner in a Lancaster Bomber during WW2 and his father served in the RAF. 

Armed Forces Outreach Coordinator - Sarah Kerr 

 

Sarah is the Armed Forces Outreach Support Coordinator at Shropshire Council. Sarah and her team are based in the Veterans Hub, offering signposting, support, and advice. 

 

She is also supported by a range of organisations and charities who can provide information on housing, healthcare, finance and benefits, education, wellbeing, and employment.
