Orthopaedic Institute Research

Registered Charity Number 1044906

The Orthopaedic Institute Limited founded in 1971, is a small independent registered charity who, for over 50 years, has proudly supported the specialist research centres at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH).

The Executive Committee, under the leadership of the Chair Mr Eric Evans, decides the policy of the Institute and monitors its progress.

The Research Panel, under the direction of the Chair Mrs Teresa Jones, considers new research projects proposed by research staff and clinicians and recommends to the Executive Committee, the projects to be funded from the income provided by grants and donations received.

All the money we raise supports research and education for patient benefit in the specialist research centres and departments within the hospital, a long standing centre of excellence in world orthopaedics.

Research

The range of research is impressive, from clinical trials in common orthopaedic problems to molecular biology approaches to less common forms of muscular dystrophy and gait analysis in children with cerebral palsy, all well designed studies on conditions affecting patients attending our hospital.

An example of the Institute working closely with the RJAH Hospital to take forward important initiatives includes the OsCell Cell Therapy Unit.  The Orthopaedic Institute Charity have provided funding for the Oscell Cell Therapy Unit, for over twenty years.

The current ongoing ASCOT Study is looking at Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI), a technique used to help patients with an articular cartilage defect, something that can impact younger people in their 20s and 30s.

The procedure sees a sample of cartilage removed from the patient’s knee from which their own cells are then grown in a laboratory.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) concluded the evidence to be enough to approve the technique for wider use on the NHS.

Following our research, we were the first site in the UK able to offer ACI.

Education and Training

The Orthopaedic Institute has been committed to running its Oswestry Course Programme of Orthopaedic Courses since the 1970s and its ever-developing portfolio has grown to around 26 courses per year held at the Institute of Orthopaedics at the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. We benefit greatly from the participation of excellent Faculty trainers from all over the UK and abroad, along with incredible levels of contribution from the many patients who participate, thus enriching the learning experience by sharing their personal clinical journeys. The reputation of the courses is such that they attract delegates from around the world to gain further knowledge, prepare for their FRCS Examinations or add to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Feedback from delegates, faculty and sponsors is always exceptionally positive.

The Oswestry Course Programme includes a selection of long-running flagship orthopaedic courses with an enviable reputation, many aimed at FRCS examination preparation for Orthopaedic Registrars and Specialty Doctors. Described by delegates as an “absolute must” is the 6-day Intensive Course in Basic Science in Orthopaedics which has been running for nearly 30 years and the Foot & Ankle Course with its dry-bone, arthroscopy workshops and a section in the ORLAU (Orthotic Research and Locomotor Assessment Unit) Gait Lab which has been running for nearly 20 years. The “superlative” highly-acclaimed Anatomy & Surgical Exposures for FRCS preparation course which is offered twice a year has the most exceptional feedback.

In addition to the examination preparation courses, the Oswestry Course Programme includes courses covering Radiology, Upper Limb, Lower Limb, Spine, Cadaveric, Orthotics, Gait, Anaesthetics, a course for CT1 and CT2 Registrars preparing for their ST3 interviews and a very popular series of Study Days for GPs and AHPs.
