Mr Makwana's clinical interests include foot and ankle disorders, sports injuries of the foot and ankle and complex revision surgery. He also has a specialist interest in ACI (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) for the ankle.

Mr Makwana achieved his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in July 1989 from St George's Medical School in London. He completed his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) exam in Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1993 before completing his FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Edinburgh in February 1999.

Mr Makwana was appointed to RJAH in 2001.

Mr Makwana was a Specialist Registrar in Leicestershire and also has been part of many fellowships in Dublin; Baltimore, Maryland; and Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr Makwana has performed over 30 ankle joint replacements and over 10 autologous chondrocyte implantation techniques of the talus. He regulary performs revision surgery for foot and ankle problems and also forefoot arthroplastly for rheumatoid arthritis patients. He has been the Regional Speciality Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons in North Wales, Chair of the National Advisory Group for Orthopaedics Wales, Surgical Tutor and Honorary Lecturer at University Hospital Wales. He is also currently on the British Orthopaedic Association Patient Liaison Group and is the Clinical Lead at RJAH for the Appraisal of Medical Staff. Mr Makwana has been involved in a number of research articles and publications since 1995.
