Mr Summers' was appointed a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford in 1989. He retired from operative spinal surgery in 2017 but continued non-operative management of patients with spinal pain. In 2018, he was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Specialist at RJAH and is part of a large team of spinal surgeons and other spinal specialists. He is a senior lecturer at the University of Keele Medical School teaching orthopaedic and musculoskeletal medicine to medical students. He is also lead tutor for Medical Humanities at the Medical School and devises and organises seminars for medical students in many artistic disciplines including poetry, the visual arts, theatre and cinema. This being an attempt to remind students that patients are human beings as well as an interesting mixture of symptoms and physical signs.
