Simulation training making a real difference to RJAH Staff Nurse

A Staff Nurse at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital has shared her experiences of learning through the hospital’s Simulation Lab – which played a key role in shaping her confidence, skills and career development.

Rhian Traquair, who works on Clwyd Ward – the hospital’s dedicated enhanced recovery ward – for the past three years, after qualifying from Staffordshire University with a first-class degree, but her path through university wasn’t always straightforward.

“I really struggled during my degree at first,” Rhian said. “It was only later during my studies that I was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. With that understanding and the right support in place, everything changed.

“I found ways of learning that worked for me, and I’m really proud to have graduated with a first-class degree.”

Before qualifying, Rhian was awarded a ‘golden ticket’ to work at the Oswestry-based hospital, meaning she was offered a role without the need for a formal interview, based on her performance and values demonstrated during placements at the Trust.

Since joining Shropshire’s specialist orthopaedic hospital, she has embraced opportunities to continue developing her skills particularly through the Simulation Lab which offers cutting-edge, simulation-based training designed to prepare for real-world clinical situations.

Rhian said: “The Simulation Lab has been amazing for me – it’s hands-on, interactive and feels very real, but it’s also a safe space where you can learn and make mistakes without pressure.

“That kind of environment really suits how I learn. It’s so much more effective for me than traditional classroom-based teaching, giving you time to reflect and build your confidence.

“I’ve grown so much in confidence since using the Simulation Lab. You come away from sessions feeling more prepared and more certain of your abilities.”

Her passion for simulation-based learning has since led her to be more involved, supporting the team as a faculty member, helping deliver training to other staff.

She added: “I really enjoy being involved in delivering training and it’s nice to be able to support others in the same way I’ve been supported. The Simulation Lab has had a huge impact on my professional development, providing me with a powerful and practical way to learn.”

Donna St John, Professional Development and Simulation Manager, said: “Rhian is a fantastic example of how simulation can support staff to develop and thrive. We create a safe space for learning and reflection on important topics.

“She is a real asset to the simulation faculty – she has completed the Foundations of Simulation Course at Staffordshire University, and we are supporting her in learning the different roles of a Simulation Facilitator. She’s incredibly passionate about simulation-based learning and brings a really positive, supportive energy when working with others.”
