The Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Team at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) are calling on people to get sporty, lace up their trainers and take part in a virtual 5k event – in support of Sarcoma Awareness Month.

The annual event will take place over the weekend of Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July, and is open to people of all ages and abilities. Participants can walk, run, roll, kayak or swim the 5k distance wherever and whenever suits them.

Sarcoma Awareness Month takes place every July and the race aims to raise awareness of sarcomas, a rare cancer that affects soft tissue and bone. Funds raised will go directly to Sarcoma UK, a national charity that funds vital research, provides support for those affected, and campaigns for better treatments and earlier diagnoses.

Elaine Richardson, Macmillan Sarcoma Clinical Nurse Specialist and event organiser, said: “Nearly 90% of the public either do not know what a sarcoma is, or only have a vague idea – we want to change that, as the impact it has on patients and their families is huge.

“This event is about raising awareness, having fun, and making a real difference by supporting Sarcoma UK’s incredible work. Whether you’re running, walking or swimming, we’d love as many people as possible to get involved.

“All proceeds from the event will go directly to Sarcoma UK – and we would love to top last year’s event, which raised over £1000.”

Entry costs £16 for adults, and £6 for juniors. Every registered participant will receive a t-shirt and a treat. The t-shirts have been kindly donated by Sarcoma UK, who are currently running a campaign – Rare but Real – designed to bring sarcoma into the spotlight, advocate for early diagnosis, and push for equitable access to care.

Participants will also be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a week’s holiday, generously donated by Thornley Holiday Parks, and there will be a competition for the best decorated race number.

The event is wheelchair accessible, and participants can complete the 5K solo, with family, friends or even a furry companion – whatever works best.
