RJAH strengthens Board with appointment of experienced clinician

Experienced NHS Medical Director Mr Mike Hallisey has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.
Mike brings with him a wealth of leadership experience, deep clinical expertise, and a longstanding connection to RJAH. Throughout his distinguished career, he has played a significant role in training and mentoring generations of orthopaedic surgeons, many of whom have developed their careers here at RJAH and across the wider NHS.
His appointment represents a major addition to the Trust Board, bringing invaluable insight into clinical excellence, medical education, and healthcare leadership at a time of continued ambition and development for the Trust.
Welcoming the appointment, Trust Chair Harry Turner said: “Mike is hugely respected across orthopaedics and the wider NHS, and we are absolutely delighted to welcome him to the Board. His longstanding association with RJAH, together with his experience in developing and supporting so many surgeons throughout his career, makes him an exceptional addition to the Trust.
"His insight, leadership and commitment to excellence will be of enormous value as we continue to build on RJAH’s reputation as a centre of outstanding patient care, education and innovation. His knowledge will also be welcome as we continue to develop our research activity.”
Mike currently works for University Hospitals Birmingham, holding the position of Medical Director, Director of Education and Consultant in General Surgery. He will take up his Non-Executive post at RJAH from Monday 1 June.
Mike began his career in 1992 where he held the position of a senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham. In 1996 he gained his consultant’s position for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Surgical Oncology, where he focused on a wide range of cancers, more recently focusing on Breast and Upper Gastrointestinal cancers. He helped support the development of a regional service in Angiosarcoma. In recent years, he has reduced his clinical commitment but still supports the breast services clinically.
A former president of the British Association of Surgical Oncology, Mike has served as the chair of the Cancer Service Committee for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. and has supported the Trial Management Committee. He has also been involved with two major cancer trials.
Throughout his career, Mike, has been actively involved in medical education and was once a member of the Deanery Committee overseeing the training of house officers now known as foundation trainees. In addition to this, he has worked with colleagues to validate a cognitive stimulation which is used as a tool for trainee surgeons.
Mike’s commitment to patient care, professional standards, and supporting the next generation of clinicians aligns strongly with RJAH’s values and strategic vision.
