Young people across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and neighbouring areas are being supported to discover rewarding careers in healthcare through the widening participation work taking place at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH).

The Trust’s Apprenticeship and Widening Participation Team is helping to nurture the workforce of tomorrow by supporting people at different stages of their career journey and introducing young people to the wide variety of clinical and non-clinical roles available within the NHS.

Its programme includes careers events, work experience, supported internships, school visits and pathways into apprenticeships, helping to make healthcare careers more visible and accessible.

The team is supported by staff ambassadors who attend events and speak to young people about their professions, career journeys and the different routes into specific roles.

On Tuesday 3 November, RJAH will welcome 180 students from local schools and colleges to a dedicated careers event at the Veterans’ Centre.

The event will focus exclusively on clinical careers within RJAH, giving students in Years 10 to 13 the opportunity to meet hospital staff, ask questions and learn more about the wide variety of roles involved in delivering patient care.

Julia Lay, Apprenticeship and Widening Participation Lead at RJAH, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming 180 students to RJAH for the event.

“There are so many rewarding clinical careers available within the NHS. By giving young people the opportunity to speak directly to our staff ambassadors, we hope to raise aspirations and help them discover roles they may not previously have considered.”

Allen Edwards, Apprenticeship and Widening Participation Lead, added: “Our staff ambassadors bring healthcare careers to life by sharing their experiences and explaining what their roles involve.

“Through these conversations and our wider programme of events and opportunities, we want to help nurture the NHS workforce of tomorrow.”

The Trust’s widening participation work aims to improve access to education, training and employment opportunities while helping to develop a workforce that reflects the communities it serves.
