Two talented members of the Catering Team at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) represented the Trust at the regional heats of the NHS Chef of the Year 2026 competition.
The two Chef’s, Katie Rogers and Kirsty Naden, took part in the event, which was held at Manchester Trafford College. Now in its sixth year, the competition forms part of a national programme that grew out of 2020 Independent Review of NHS Hospital Food, celebrating the passion, creativity and skill of NHS catering professionals across the country.
Katie and Kirsty have a wealth of knowledge between them, with 24 years of experience working in the kitchens at the Oswestry-based hospital. Katie started her catering journey 7 years ago, and Kirsty has been part of the team for 17 years.
During the competition, they were tasked with producing a three-course meal in just 90-minutes, working within strict budget and nutritional requirements.
The pair prepared plant-based cauliflower buffalo wings with a hot cheese sauce for the starter, honey-garlic glazed salmon, coconut cauliflower rice and bok choy for the main course, and a strawberry pannacotta for dessert.
Dan Hoggett, Catering Manager, said: “They both performed brilliantly, showcasing their skills, creativity and professionalism against some strong competition. It was fantastic to see the hard work and passion they put into their cooking really shine through.
“Although they didn’t get through to the finals, I’m incredibly proud of them both. They represented the team brilliantly and should be very pleased of what they achieved.”
This isn’t the first time the Catering Team at Shropshire’s specialist orthopaedic hospital have taken part in the competition.
Martine Williams, Facilities Manager, said: “At RJAH, we actively encourage colleagues to take part in additional training and development opportunities that help them to build on their skills, broaden their experience and continue their professional growth – the NHS Chef of the Year of the Year competition is a fantastic example of this.
“The team’s participation over the years has also inspired new ideas and enhanced the quality and variety of food available to patients, staff and visitors.”
