Exceptional leadership and a commitment to improving patient safety have earned a Practice Development Nurse January’s RJAH Stars Award – recognising her impact on the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) at Shropshire’s specialist orthopaedic hospital.
Jo Davies, who has worked at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital since qualifying five and a half years ago, stepped into the Practice Development role just over a 12 months ago and has played a pivotal role in supporting and developing nursing staff across MCSI.
She was nominated by Lauren Hutchinson, MCSI Ward Manager, who hailed Jo for the positive impact her work has on enhancing patient safety, boosting staff morale and contributing to improved patient experience.
Lauren said: “Before Jo stepped into the Practice Development Nurse role, MCSI faced significant challenges relating to staff skill set and patient safety.
“Jo has shown exceptional leadership, initiative, and dedication in transforming the culture and competence of the nursing workforce on MCSI. She independently developed a bespoke training programme tailored specifically for MCSI, ensuring that education is practical, relevant and aligned with the challenges faced on the ward. Her sessions are consistently praised by everyone who attends who commend her teaching style, her depth of knowledge, and her ability to build confidence in a safe learning environment.
“The positive impact of her work has been recognised beyond the MCSI team, with members of the wider multi-disciplinary team highlighting the significant improvements in staff skills, enthusiasm and professional pride since Jo came into post.
“She is a passionate, committed and transformational and invaluable member of our senior team.”
The RJAH Stars Award is presented to a team or individual across the Oswestry-based hospital monthly, celebrating those that go above and beyond.
Jo said: “It was a big surprise, and a really lovely one as well – it made my day!
“It was a tricky time when I started in the role, but it’s been an amazing job. I get the privilege of working with all our new staff and I get to work with staff who have been here a long time as well.
“In my interview, I said my aim was to make sure that the kindness on the ward would reflect into the ward’s community and the work that we do, and I hope that that’s what I have managed to achieve.
“It’s been lovely to get this recognition and I think a lot of people can get imposter syndrome in a new role, so it’s been reassuring to have people say ‘you’re doing okay’!”
Jo was presented his award from Stacey Keegan, Chief Executive at Shropshire’s specialist hospital, consisting of a certificate, voucher and chocolates thanks to the League of Friends.
Stacey said: “Jo’s impact on MCSI has been remarkable. Her leadership, commitment to education and focus on patient safety have made a real and lasting difference for both staff and patients.
“She is a fantastic example of the dedication and professionalism we value at RJAH, and I’m delighted to recognise her with a well-deserved RJAH Stars Award.”
