Family gives back to RJAH sarcoma team after decades of care

A grateful family has made a £400 donation to Shropshire’s specialist orthopaedic hospital – in memory of a much-loved husband and father who was cared for by the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Team for more than three decades.

Jean Kilvert, alongside her sons Geoff and Karl, visited Montgomery Unit at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital to present the donation, which was raised through funeral proceedings following the death of Jean’s husband, Mike, in November 2025.

Mike was first diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma of the muscle at the age of 39 and was cared for by the Oswestry-based hospital for just over 30 years.

During that time, he underwent multiple operations and received ongoing specialist support from the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Team.

Before ill health forced him to stop working, Mike was a groundsman, and outside of work, he and Jean shared a love of caravanning, enjoying a full and happy life together alongside quality time with their family.

Jean, who lives in Llanymynech, said: “We are utterly grateful for all the care Mike received over the years – we have nothing but praise for the team. The Montgomery Unit was very close to Mike’s heart, and the staff have also been so incredibly kind and supportive to me since his passing.

“Donating to the team in Mike’s memory felt like the right thing to do, as a small way of saying thank you for everything they did for him and for us as a family.”

Montgomery Unit is one of five specialist bone cancer centres in the UK and treats patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas, bone metastases, benign bone and soft tissue tumours and tumour-like conditions.

“Donations like this mean so much to us as a team, and we are extremely grateful to Jean, Geoff and Karl for their generosity.”
