5-year-old Maisie raises funds for children’s ward at RJAH

A remarkable 5-year-old from Oswestry is raising money to help brighten the days of children receiving care at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH).

Maisie Cumine decided she wanted to make a difference after spending time around hospitals with her family. Her dad, Jon, receives regular treatment for vasculitis GPA, while Maisie herself attends appointments due to hearing difficulties. Her mum, Robyn, also lives with mobility issues.

Inspired by her experiences, Maisie said she wanted to help children in hospital because they need “cheering up” and because some children “don’t have much”.

Determined to make a difference, Maisie has been selling some of her own toys, creating handmade bracelets, necklaces and keyrings, and is hoping to grow flowers to sell.

So far, she has raised £300.

A significant contribution came from Oswestry Town Museum, which purchased a large selection of Maisie’s handmade jewellery. Maisie crated around 13 necklaces and 33 bracelets – which the museum plans to give to children during its Heritage Open Days.

Robyn said: “Maisie decided completely on her own that she wanted to help children in hospital. Seeing the amount of effort she has put into making the bracelets and necklaces has been incredible.

“We are so grateful to everyone at Oswestry Town Museum for supporting Maisie’s fundraising and helping her achieve her goal.”

The money raised will be used to purchase toys, games and other items for children receiving care on the dedicated paediatric ward at RJAH.

Maisie and her family will personally buy the items before delivering them to the ward, ensuring every penny goes towards helping young patients.

Maisie said: “Children in hospital need cheering up and helping.”

The team on Alice Ward have thanked Maisie for her kindness and generosity, describing her fundraising efforts as inspirational.

“Her determination to help other children is truly inspiring – the toys and activities she purchases will bring comfort, distraction and smiles to many young patients during their stay with us.”
