Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) Therapy Team

The Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) Therapy Team provides a comprehensive service to the patients of the MCSI.

The therapy team comprises Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Therapy Associate Practitioners and Therapy Support Workers. We also have an Assistive Technology Assistant who works with our patients to enable access to technology.

The therapy service at MCSI starts on admission, continues through the rehabilitation phase and following discharge into the community.

Acute rehabilitation can include respiratory care, maintenance of joint range of movement (including upper limb splint provision when required), patient education and the facilitation of independence within the immediate ward environment, including use of technology, e.g. phone or tablet.

Active rehabilitation is a patient-centred process which can take place in a variety of areas, e.g. on the wards, in the therapy treatment areas, the hydrotherapy pool and the rehabilitation flat.

Depending on your needs, rehabilitation potential and personal goals (identified through the goal planning process), your therapy intervention in the active rehabilitation phase may include:

  • Practicing Activities of Daily Living (washing, dressing, grooming, etc).

  • Transfers – moving from one place to another, e.g. bed to wheelchair or in/out of car.

  • Improving mobility – in wheelchair (powered or manual) and/or walking.

  • Home/work/school assessments and support/advice to enable your return where possible.

  • Community reintegration – opportunities to spend time outside of the hospital in preparation for your discharge.

As a team, we aim to enable our patients to reach the maximum level of independence possible for them, allowing them to fully participate in and enjoy their future life.
