Patient Stories

Read below our patients' experiences after being part of our enhanced recovery programme.

Graham's story

Graham Cunliffe, from Whittington, was the first patient to be discharged the same day as their surgery.

Graham said: “I had a fantastic experience at RJAH,
and I was surprised when I was told I could go home the
same day as my operation. The team were fab, and I’m more than happy with my progress and goals after being discharged from the hospital – thank you to all involved.”

Eric and Peter's story

Both Eric Allinson, from Gloucestershire, and Peter Dawson, from Llangyniew, had knee replacements on the same day - that day being their birthday!

Eric, who turned 87 said, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the date of my operation was my birthday. I got the best birthday gift – a new knee. I had a successful operation with Mr Yannis Seferlis and was advised I was well enough to return home on the same day. I was happy with this decision. Recovering in my home environment on my birthday felt better. The staff were very helpful and friendly. I couldn’t fault the treatment I received."

Peter, who celebrated his 81st birthday, said: “I was keen to get my surgery done and was pleased to discover it was on my birthday. The surgery was successful, which was brilliant as it meant I was able to go home the same day as part of the enhanced recovery programme. Mr Niall Graham had explained well prior to my surgery that it would be a painful operation, and as part of the programme I had to do exercises prior to my surgery. I recommend these are done in preparation to aid with the recovery – it helped me with mine.”

Mary's story

Mary Gallacher, 91 from Rhyl, was the 1,000th patient to be discharged on the same day as her operation through the enhanced recovery programme.

She said: “I am thankful to Mr Edmond U for my surgery and also my family for their support with my recovery.”
