Working on MCSI

Day to day - what is great about the role and the unit?

There is something different every day. By having the skill to care for a spinal cord injury patient at any part of their journey means you will have a variety to your days.

Whether working with the acutely injured patients, needing acute medical skills such as respiratory and neurological care, actively rehabilitating patients and working closely with them and their loved ones whilst they relearn how to do everyday tasks or supporting them with discharge planning at home or in the community.

There’s something for everyone. No shift is the same, you get to work closely with a wide multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and everyone's voice is valued.

Why is the team great?

It is a supportive team. A wide MDT means working with several professionals to ensure patient care and safety is of highest priority. This brings endless opportunities for learning and developing. It also brings with it opportunities for friendships and social aspects.

There is an extremely supportive and proactive management team who pride themselves on staff development and service improvements for a centre of excellence.

What career opportunities are there?

There are opportunities from new to care and spinal cord injury right through to Consultant Nurse.

Specialist training is offered to provide a multitude of experience and opportunities to have a full career within spinal cord injuries, whether this is clinical or managerial.

Completion of specialist in house training and experience of rotating throughout the unit will be acknowledged with increase banding for recognition of specialist skills and knowledge required to care for a patient with spinal cord injuries at every part in their pathway. External training opportunities are provided to undertake professional training and qualifications.

There are opportunities to:

  • work within inpatient and outpatient settings
  • care for acutely unwell patients and gain skills within tracheostomy and increased respiratory care needs, tissue viability, pain control, diabetic management and neuro-rehabilitation
  • gain development in complex discharge planning and outreach surveillance

Why is MCSI good for flexibility and work life balance?

The management team firmly believe that a supported and happy team makes for excellence in patient care and high-quality services. For this reason, staff are listened to, and flexibility is taken seriously to ensure a safe service and a happy and highly functioning team.
