Dr Sophie Shapter graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’ Medical School in 2002 and undertook her anaesthetic training at the South Coast School of Anaesthesia and was appointed at RJAH in 2014. At this point life had come full circle as, being a local, Sophie had undertaken work experience at RJAH while a pupil at Llanfyllin High School many years ago. In her day-to-day clinical practice, aside from anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery, Dr Shapter is also involved in preoperative assessment. She undertakes teaching all levels of healthcare professionals within her working environment in addition to Foundation Year 1 doctors, Specialty Registrars and Regional Fellows on placement at RJAH. Amongst other interests, Dr Shapter is passionate about patient safety and is the Trust’s Lead for Human Factors having established a faculty developing bespoke courses delivering training, not only across the Trust, but to external organisations too. She has also been fundamental in the establishment of an immersive simulation lab and training facility in the Hedley Court Veteran’s Centre and has helped develop a faculty to deliver simulation training to staff across the Trust. Dr Shapter’s enthusiasm for education has continued outside of human factors and simulation training, having been appointed as RJAH Clinical Sub Dean for Chester University as well as Theme Co-Lead for Professionalism and Personal Professional Development.
