Rehabilitation

We have a Physiotherapy team within the unit who will provide specialist Physiotherapy assessment and treatment throughout the different stages of your journey.

This includes:

  • Pre-operative environmental assessment and planning:

We will ask you about your home set up to help identify any problem areas, so we can try to rectify these pre-operatively. Doing this will help to ensure a smooth and efficient discharge following your surgery. If possible, you should highlight any concerns about returning home after surgery to your therapist at this point.

  • Immediate post operative care

Your therapist will assess you on the ward post operatively, under the Consultant's instructions and work with you to ensure you can return home safely.

You will need to be able to do the following things prior to discharge (independently or with support):

  • Get in and out of bed
  • Stand and walk (with a walking aid as appropriate)
  • Get on and off the toilet
  • Be able to wash and dress
  • Be able to get food/drink
  • Ascend/descend steps/stairs as appropriate for your home

If you are unable to do these things safely, the Physiotherapist will refer you for an assessment with the Occupational Therapist - who will assess whether provision of equipment will increase your independence in the above tasks or whether you need a package of care to support you on your discharge home.

If your therapist feels you would benefit from some ongoing community therapy follow up (in your home), they can refer you on discharge to your local team.

  • Rehabilitation

This is ongoing rehabilitation following your discharge home. The therapist will invite you for an assessment where you will discuss your perceived problems and personal goals. They will also assess you physically and then devise an individualised treatment plan to help you achieve your goals. We provide outpatient physiotherapy treatments in clinic, the therapy gym and hydrotherapy pool as deemed appropriate by your therapist.

You may also be offered inpatient rehabilitation over 5 days, if your therapist feels it is appropriate. Please click on the link below to see more information regarding this.

If you live too far away to attend RJAH for Physiotherapy, you can also be referred to your local Physiotherapy team.

Any musculoskeletal problems not-related to your diagnosis, will be referred to your local Physiotherapy team for management.
