Metal-on-metal implants update

Posted: 28 Nov 2023

Important Update

In common with other hospitals, we are arranging follow up appointments for all patients who had metal-on-metal (MOM) hip replacements.

This is a particular type of hip replacement where both the ball and the socket are made of metal. It has been identified that in certain circumstances, these hip replacements may fail early, and it is important that patients are followed up regularly to identify any problems that may occur.

This type of metal-on-metal hip implant was rarely used at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. Patients who have had such an implant at RJAH will be contacted in the next few months to arrange a follow up appointment on an annual basis.

There is more information about this type of metal implant on the NHS website.
