Clinical assessment

The specification of the equipment that we provide is tailored to the particular needs of each person. These are determined by measurement and discussion with each person and their family/carers. This is done by our clinical team - either a physiotherapist, orthotist, clinical engineer or doctor. Measurement is usually done on the couch in one of our clinic rooms, recording body size, joint movement, muscle strength and control. Additional information can also be recorded using video film or photographs.

Workshop

We have a well-equipped engineering workshop with an expansive range of machinery including – a large & small milling machine, lathe, two bandsaws, linisher, polisher, pillar drill, welding bay, guillotine plus a large collection of hand tools. These facilities mean we can develop bespoke devices and adapt existing devices to suit individual patient needs, as well as routinely build and maintain existing patient devices. We provide these services within the guidelines of the UK Medical Devices Regulations, ISO 13485:2016 & ISO 9001:2015.

Testing facility

We have a Testometric Universal Testing machine capable of applying a range of forces to materials & patient devices. We use this to test how strong materials and assemblies are, so we can ensure any devices or adaptions that are made in our workshop, are strong and safe enough for patient use.

Computer Aided Design

We use state of the art, Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to enable us to create 3D designs of components and devices. This software helps us to visualise concepts, virtually simulate how a design will perform, enable faster prototype manufacture with suppliers and quickly explore different ideas before finalising particular designs.

Additive manufacturing

We have two 3D printers which enable us to print prototypes in house to check function and fit of a component before being sent off for manufacture.

Community engineering support

We provide the Shropshire Children’s Community Physiotherapy team with a Standing Frame engineering service. We work in partnership with the community physio team to supply, modify and service standing frames in schools and homes across Shropshire and Telford, taking the service closer to patient homes.
