Veterans Orthopaedic Centre Appeal

This is an Appeal to help fund a new £1.5 million Veterans’ Orthopaedic Centre at the specialist orthopaedic hospital, The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry, to treat veteran patients in a bespoke care environment.

Background to the Service

The current service, the first of its kind in the UK, delivers two outpatient clinics per month and is open to those who have served with the UK military, including National Service. It mostly treats arthritic lower limb problems, especially those requiring hip and knee replacements.  The service is led by Lt Col Carl Meyer, a consultant military orthopaedic surgeon at RJAH.

Why the new Centre is needed

We would like to develop the Veterans Service by providing a dedicated environment specifically designed for their care and expanding the service to cover the whole range of orthopaedic treatment and rehabilitation, and connecting to other healthcare services. The new purpose designed Centre will be built to the highest standards and have a more familiar military feel to make our veteran patients more comfortable. It will provide a modern state of the art facility in line with the Trust’s vision to be the leading centre in orthopaedic care.

Supporting our Veterans

Our hospital is very proud to support the Armed Forces, from releasing reservist staff for duty to making an official pledge by signing up to the Armed Forces Covenant. We also fully support the recommendations in the Chevasse Report to do more for our Veterans and welcome our involvement with the recently formed Veterans Covenant Hospital Alliance under the Patron General Lord Dannatt.

Our Patrons

We are delighted to have the support of the following patrons:

Dame Kelly Holmes:

I am delighted to be able to offer my patronage and support to the Veterans' Orthopaedic Service at RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital. As a proud veteran, I recognise the need for a first class medical support service for our veterans who have given so much for their country.  I wish the Veterans' Orthopaedic Service the very best of luck with their appeal for a new bespoke facility and with their continued provision of a quality medical service at RJAH.

Dame Vera Lynn:

"We owe veterans a great debt of gratitude and I was encourage to hear about the hospital's work treating more than 1000 patients with knee and hip problems as it means we are doing our duty to care for them after they have done so much for us."

Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Ian James Sawers:

"I am fully in support of such an excellent service that provides care to those who have served, delivered by a medical team who understand their unique requirements."

We aim to complete the fundraising by September 2019. Any monies raised above the total will be used to further develop the patient experience for example specialist equipment and furnishings.
