The Celebration of Achievement Awards 2018 took place at the Lion Quays Hotel in Oswestry on Thursday 22 November and was compered by RJAH consultant surgeon Mr Robin Banerjee.

- Outstanding Individual Achievement of the Year Award - Professor Tracey Willis, Paediatric Neuromuscular Consultant
The nomination for Tracey praised her commitment to the Muscle Team at RJAH, and the worldwide travel she has undertaken to promote it. She is described as a dynamic and inspirational leader, who has really shaped and developed an outstanding team.
- Cornerstone Award - Porters
The nomination for this team starts by saying: Where would we be without our porters? They provide a vital service between departments, with a huge range of responsibilities. Our porters can be found wheeling patients around the hospital, taking linen to wards, delivering samples to labs or meals to wards, sorting mail and a myriad of other jobs in between.
- Volunteer of the Year Award - Lady Trevor
Lady Trevor, a leading figure in our League of Friends, is an innovator and who is in possession of rare skills which allow them to view the path ahead, identify opportunities and ways to make things better. Her commitment is exceptional, helping the hospital in so many ways since 1967 - including most recently with the Horatio's Garden Appeal.
- NHS70 Lifetime Achievement Award - Valerie Jones, Superintendent Radiographer
Valerie has worked at RJAH for more than 30 years. Her nomination came with endorsements from almost 20 colleagues in the Radiology Department, who all praise her warmth (with both patients and colleagues), her generosity and her skill. She is praised for her dedication to the CT team, and described as an ambassador for the Trust!
- STAR Award - Sheldon Ward
Sheldon Ward retained 5-STAR status in 2018 and were praised by Director of Nursing Bev Tabernacle for "blowing her away" during their STAR presentation. Well done, team!
- Sir Robert Jones Doctor of the Year Award - Prasanth Kandepalli
Prasanth is a great champion of Clinical Audit on the Medical firm and last year completed 4 audits all based on NICE guidelines. He understands the importance of linking clinical audit to quality improvement and many of his audits over the years have shown improvement in the Trusts performance, principally because they drive those changes forward.
- Richard Clarke Unsung Hero Award - Mike Nowell, IT Infrastructure and Service Team Lead
Mike is heralded in his nomination as the man behind the scenes who keeps the hospital running well. His commitment and dedication is legendary within his own department, where he is also recognised as a great manager and friend.
- Partnership Award - Horatio's Garden
This a project that will have an impact on so many of our most vulnerable patients for years and years to come. It will see a bespoke garden for the benefit of our patients in the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries. Ours will be only the fifth of its type in the country.
- Governor of the Year Award - Russell Luckock
Russell is a loyal supporter and ambassador for RJAH and an effective representative for our members. He lives some way from the hospital, but has been an active participant since taking up the role in 2011. He can be relied on to bring his wealth of experience and provide insightful views on the hospitals business.

Patient Safety Award - Judith Sansom, Divisional Governance Lead
The nomination for Judith highlights her work started through the Improvement Champions programme to improve our Duty of Candour processes, making the hospital a safer place for all our patients and improving the experience for those few for whom something has unfortunately gone wrong.

Education and Learning Award - Diane Powell, Metabolic Technician
Diane was nominated in recognition of her commitment to learning and development. To further the care of patients she looked at the effects of bisphosphonate drugs on bone health by using the data collected from many patients who have had their bone marker measured. Much of the work she has done was of her own initiative and she learned to use a complex statistics package to enable her to do this. This has enhanced her role within the bone density (DXA) team and has contributed significantly to the outcome of the work that the team do for patient care.

Living the Values Award - Olivia Evans, IT Helpdesk Engineer
Olivia is, according to her nomination, a ‘total star’! She is another winner tonight to have participated in our Improvement Champions programme, and is praised for her work to improve IT processes for new starters. She’s also singled out for her work on the NHS Mail project earlier this year.

Quality Improvement of the Year Award - Linda Head, Moving and Handling Co-ordinator
Linda’s nomination sets out her tireless work that culminated in the Trust investing in more than 200 new beds - improving clinical efficacy and helping to reduce the risk of injuries to both patients and staff alike. Linda’s commitment to this aim saw her undertaking audits, writing business cases and carry out evaluations in order to successfully make her case.

Chief Executive's Award for Inspirational Leadership - Dr Sophie Shapter, Consultant Anaesthetist
The winner of tonight’s award is someone who has really led the way in terms of making us a clinically safer organisation. This person has done that through their commitment and determination to deliver a programme of Human Factors Training, and to embed that within the organisation. That we have got this far with such a vital piece of work is down to this remarkable individual.
- Mary Powell Nurse of the Year Award - Lena Price, Staff Nurse, HDU
Lena is a committed and dedicated caring nurse who exemplifies the qualities a nurse should have. Lena has dedicated over 30 years of service to her patients at our hospital. She approaches every day with a cheerful and positive outlook, she inspires hope and confidence in the care she provides each day with a careful understanding of the issues that patients have.

Outstanding Team Achievement of the Year Award - Catering
As the nomination for the Catering Team highlights, food is a crucial element of any patient’s journey. Our catering has established a reputation that is the envy of Trusts across the country, and was this year rated as the best food in the NHS for the 12th time in the last 13 years in the CQC’s Adult Inpatient Survey.

Patient Choice Award - Mr Pete Gallacher, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Pete emerged as the winner in a close race with three colleagues- winning by 15 votes in a contest where more than 1,200 were cast. He was nominated by patients Julie Lane and Alison Morris, who both praised the care he'd given them and the impact it had on their lives.
