Pay and Conditions

Agenda for Change applies to the majority of staff across the NHS (except medical employees and very senior managers) which means that salary is determined according to responsibility. Click here for more information

All staff who are contracted to 37.5 hours a week are also entitled to 27 days annual leave plus bank holidays. 

After five years NHS service, this increases to 29 days and again increases to 33 days following 10 years service.

Part-time members of staff receive leave calculated on a pro-rata basis which is based on the hours they work. 

NHS Pension Scheme

NHS employees aged between 16 and 75 are automatically enrolled in to the NHS pension scheme. Membership is voluntary and employees can opt out at any time.

Flexible Working

Our staff are encouraged to maintain a good work-life balance, which we support by providing a range of flexible working patterns subject to the need of the service.

Our flexible working policy allows out staff to meet changing priorities throughout their career, and options include; career breaks, secondments, flexible hours and bank contracts. 

Training and Development

Our core training, is a legal requirement to ensure that safe working practices are in place, not only for our patients but also for staff protection. 

In addition to this, it is also important to support staff in their development, in order to grow and shape their careers.  Development can take place through a variety of methods.

Our Wellbeing

Our Wellbeing focusses on the promotion of health and wellbeing and how RJAH staff can live healthier lifestyles.

We work with Care First - an employee assistance service - who provide 24/7 access to counselling and support.

We also offer a self-refferal physiotherapy service and access to the onsite hydrotherapy pool for all members of RJAH staff. 

Alongside this, we host an annual Health and Wellbeing Day and local gyms and health clubs also offer corporate discount for RJAH staff. 


Staff are able to take advantage of Peter Pan Day Nursey which is based on the RJAH hospital site.

The nursery offfers flexible childcare arrangements and is open Monday - Friday from 7am.

They are able to look after children from six months old up to pre-school age in areas that include classrooms and outdoor play areas.

Salary Sacrifice Schemes

Staff also have access to our employee salary sacrifice schemes which involves reducing an employees taxable salary in return for a non-cash benefit.

Currently the scheme at RJAH includes; childcare vouchers, car lease and cycle to work. 


As an NHS employee, our staff also have access to a range of discounts at a range of retailers, restaurants, travel companies, phone contracts and more.

Staff Awards

At RJAH, we run a monthly staff award called the Health Hero Award which is given to a member of staff to recognise their outstanding effort, commitment and professionalism to their patients and/or colleagues.
