Library & Knowledge Service

On this page you will find information about the Library & Knowledge Service at RJAH:

The Library & Knowledge Service provides library and information services to all RJAH staff and students on placement.  We have over 4, 000 books and pamphlets, and 120 journal titles covering all aspects of medicine, nursing and health with a special emphasis on orthopaedics. Items may be available in print and/or electronic format.

We also work in partnership with Staffordshire University to provide support and facilities for their staff and students at the Trust. If you are a Staffordshire University student at the Trust on placement please make yourself known to a member of library staff so that we can ensure you know about services tailored exclusively for you.

Where is the library?

We are located in the Institute of Orthopaedics building (location 9) off the hospital main corridor. Walk through the doors (unlocked during staffed hours) and go up the stairs to the left. Turn left at the top of the stairs and the library is straight in front of you.

We are committed to providing as accessible a service as possible. We are happy to make library materials available on the ground floor, or in your workplace if necessary. There are coloured overlays, reading rulers  and magnifiers available for use in the library should these be of benefit to you.

Please alert us to any special requirements you might have and we will endeavour to provide for them if possible.

Borrowing, renewing and returning books

  • Most users are entitled to borrow eight books at any one time.
  • You MUST be registered with the library before you can borrow books

How to borrow a book

The library has a self-issue machine so you can borrow books 24/7 as long as you bring your library card with you. You will be shown how to borrow a book as part of your induction when you join the library. You do not need your card in order to return books, just scan them and leave them in the book return box.  Detailed instructions on borrowing, returning and renewing library books are available here.

Renewing books

Books owned by RJAH Library & Knowledge Service can usually be renewed for a further four week period if they have not been reserved by another user.

After five consecutive renewals we will ask you to bring the books into the library (even if you still want to renew them) to ensure that you still have the items in your possession.

  • Books can be renewed online using the SHeLib Catalogue. You will need to login to the catalogue with your library card number and password. If you have forgotten these details please contact the library.
  • Alternatively you can contact the library and ask us to renew your books for you

Renewal of books which have been obtained for you on interlibrary loan from another library can be subject to other considerations such as overdue charges or renewal charges, particularly if the item has been obtained from an external source e.g. the British Library. It is quite possible that you might not be able to renew such items. In these circumstances we ask that you contact a member of library staff.

Returning books

  • Place books for return in the book return box which is situated under the self-issue machine in the library. During staffed library opening hours you can hand the items in at the library desk if you prefer.
  • Under no circumstances should you leave returned books at the library desk during unstaffed opening hours – please ensure you place them in the book return box.

The RJAH Library & Knowledge Service does not charge for the late return of our own books. However, Shrewsbury and Telford Health libraries and some other external sources charge overdue fees which are you are liable to pay if you have returned the items late.

Please do not leave any confidential information or patient identifiable information in the library reading room or I.T room. We take a robust approach to enforcing this requirement. There is a confishred bin at the bottom of the Institute stairs for the safe disposal of this information.
