Rotary Club gardening to improve patient and staff experience

Green-fingered members of a rotary club have been volunteering at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital – helping to improve the grounds for patients, visitors and staff.

The Rotary Club of Oswestry Cambrian have recently been gardening to improve the landscape around the Oswestry-based hospital.

Last year, the group decided to refurbish the roundabout outside the main entrance

Cath Baldry, President of the Rotary Club of Oswestry Cambrian, said: “When we revamped the roundabout we worked with local builders and businesses, who donated time and materials to help us give the roundabout a new lease of life.

“Our members removed weeds, laid turf and spread slate chipping as well as planting around 400 purple crocus bulbs as part of the End Polio Now campaign.”

Earlier this summer, the club decided they would continue their gardening at RJAH.

Cath continued: “We have now started gardening work on other areas of the hospital to make them more presentable for staff and patients and maintenance-free for the Estates team.

“We started in Patient Car Park A where we dug out the hard clay soil and put down weed matting and slate chippings. We’ll slowly be moving around the rest of the hospital to do the same.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to Travis Perkins Oswestry who gave us slate at cost price, to the League of Friends to RJAH who purchased the rest of the slate for us and the Estates Department at RJAH who funded the wood chipping.

“If there are any local businesses that can support us with his project we would be very grateful, and also if anyone would like to come and help, please get in touch with us.”

Victoria Sugden, Charity Director for the League of Friends, said: “We’re so thankful to the Rotary Club of Oswestry Cambrian for revamping our gardens areas across the hospital site.

“The improvements will really make a difference to both staff and patients at RJAH.”

The Rotary Club of Oswestry Cambrian welcome new members and meet every Thursday at 7:30pm at the Wynnstay Hotel. For more information about the club, head to their website - http://www.oswestrycambrianrc.co.uk/index.html
