Powys Ward excels in 5 STAR rating

Powys Ward at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital has achieved an impressively high rating for care and management in a recent STAR assessment.

The general surgical ward for inpatients is the second at the Oswestry-based hospital to be given 5 STARs in the STAR (Sustaining Quality Through Assessment & Review) process. 5 STARs acknowledges that Powys is a high performing team in relation to the delivery of care to their patients provided by the Multidisciplinary team.

The assessment included testing the quality of patient care, but also management structures and innovation.  Their work was assessed by a panel which included executive and non-executive involvement as well as patient involvement and external stakeholders.

STAR is a Trust-wide uniform approach in monitoring quality standards of patient care, which offers managers and their staff a structure of expectations for their wards and department.

Ward Manager Deb Povall said: “The Powys Ward and team have been through many changes over the last few years.

“Achieving the all-important 5 STARs gives assurance to the patient that they remain at the centre of what we do and shows the Trust that our systems work and quality is maintained throughout.

“My team are dedicated to ensuring that every single patient that comes through the doors has the best possible care. Quite simply they care from beginning to end.

“Every single day I ask more of them and every single day they deliver.  Every individual team member brings their own unique style to the team which gels together to make Powys ward.

“I thank them for all their hard work, dedication and commitment. They have worked hard to ensure quality remains the focus.  I am so proud of them. They are all stars in my eyes.”

Powys Ward’s recognition comes hot on the heels of Ludlow Ward, the hospital’s dedicated private patient ward, which also earned 5 STARs recently.

Director of Nursing Bev Tabernacle said: “Both these wards set the standard and expectation for all of our areas in the hospital in terms of providing excellent care.

“The Ward Managers in these areas are extremely dedicated leaders and it shows in the high ratings that their teams have been given.

“Powys Ward has enhanced its recovery work to the point where patients can be safely discharged sooner than their estimated discharge date. They’ve done some fantastic work to reduce the amount of pressure sores and brilliantly tackled the challenge of a more diverse patient load.

“Ludlow Ward treats both private and NHS patients equally. They are using technology in an innovative way to help prevent patients falling and have also set up an amazing meet and greet service to make all patients feel welcome.

“I want to thank these wards for their hard work and determination to achieve these ratings.”
