Official opening of League of Friends’ run RJAH Post Office

A special celebration has taken place to mark the official opening of The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) Post Office, which is now run by the hospital’s League of Friends.

The celebration took place on Tuesday to signal the completion of the major project, which saw the League of Friends refurbish the shop and take over the running of the Post Office.

To mark the opening, Mark Brandreth, RJAH Chief Executive; Peter David, League of Friends Chairman; and Mayor of Oswestry, Councillor Sandy Best, were on hand to cut the ribbon.

The hospital Post Office had been based next door to the League of Friends shop in separate premises.

But earlier this year when former long-serving Postmaster Sheila Donning wanted to leave to concentrate on her other branch at Gobowen, the League of Friends agreed to take on the Post Office and to combine the shops to make better use of the space and to avoid duplication of products.

Both shop premises in the foyer of the hospital have now merged.

The new League of Friends shop and Post Office has been fully refurbished in a project that took five weeks.

The old-style full screened Post Office counter has been replaced by a modern open-plan counter alongside the retail counter.

Patients, staff and those visiting the Post Office will benefit from longer opening hours. The branch is now open throughout the shop’s opening hours: Monday to Friday: 9am – 5pm; Saturday: 9am – 3.30pm; Sunday: 9am – 12 noon.

This is an extra 14 hour and 30 minutes of Post Office service a week, including the weekend. Also the Post Office no longer closes at lunchtime.

Peter David, League of Friends Chairman, said: “The League are indeed happy to be providing this valuable service to the hospital, its staff, visitors and patients alike. This is further evidence of the way the League is slowly integrating into the day to day life of the hospital.”

Profits from running the shop and Post Office will be ploughed back into the hospital to improve the care and comfort of patients, visitors and staff.

This is the first League of Friends in the country operating a Post Office.

Mark Brandreth, Chief Executive, added: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to our League of Friends, who really have gone above and beyond to ensure we can retain this important service. It’s a service that our patients, staff and visitors have really come to rely on, and I’m glad they’ll be able to continue to do so.”
