Movement Analysis

3D Gait Analysis

ORLAU has a gait analysis laboratory equipped with motion capture technology that we can use to take accurate measurement of how a patients’ limbs are moving during walking. We use small reflective markers attached to the body which are tracked by special cameras. There is also force measuring equipment that we can use to record the forces on the body during movement. This is the most in-depth assessment that we perform and requires specialist software to process the data, which is then interpreted by our expert team. This is used for complex decision making and surgical planning.

2D Video Vector Gait Analysis

This is a simpler walking assessment that we perform using video cameras and force measuring equipment that enables us to overlay graphics to show where the forces are acting during walking. We can view the movements in slow motion, allowing rapid on the spot analysis to support decision making on the day. This can be used to assist in the prescription of orthotic devices and therapy needs.

Electromyography (EMG)

EMG is a way of recording the electrical activity in the muscles during movement. This can assist our clinicians in determining which muscles are not working at the right time. Muscles may be overactive, active at the wrong time or not active at all. We often do this in conjunction with 3D gait analysis but can be done as a standalone test.

Pedobarography (PBG)

This involves measuring the pressure under the foot during walking. This can be done when walking barefoot by using a plate mounted in the floor, or when walking in shoes by using special pressure measuring insoles.  This is sometimes called Plantar Pressure Measurement. It can be used to assist in the treatment of a range of complex conditions that affect feet.

Upper Limb Assessment

We perform assessment of upper limb function in children with conditions that affect their ability to use their arms and hands. We record video film of children performing a range of simple tasks or play activities to allow our clinicians to work the best treatment and therapy options.

Transportable 2D Video Vector Analysis

We have a system that we can take to other sites to support their clinicians in performing simple walking assessments and allowing them to use the technology to make their own treatment decisions.
