Information Films

New films for patients

We have carefully prepared a number of short educational films about coming into hospital.  A former ITV health reporter professionally prepared the films with the hospital team. To view the films please click on the colour links below.

These films are important as they are designed to make you feel more comfortable in advance of coming into hospital. They will familiarise you with staff / surroundings and involve you to help you prepare for daily activities.

You may need to watch the films a few times to become familiar with the techniques. Please be reassured that there is no explicit medical imagery in any of the films you have been asked to view – you will not see any operations, blood or needles in the films.

  • The film called – Hip/Knee Replacement Surgery - follows real patients through pre-operative assessment, as well coming into the ward on their day of surgery and getting out of bed after surgery and preparing to go home. It includes important advice on what to bring, what will happen and when to stop eating and drinking in readiness for your operation.
  • The film called - Activities After Hip/Knee Replacement - shows a patient practising getting out of bed after surgery, some techniques (and exercises for knee patients), getting in and out of the car and going up and down stairs safely.
  • The film called - Staying Awake for Keyhole Shoulder Surgery - is a 6 minute film following real patients who stay awake for upper limb surgery including; shoulder decompression or stabilisation, rotator cuff repair and capsular release. The film follows the patients when they arrive at the Menzies Unit, through their operation procedures and preparing to go home on the same day.
  • The film called - Ludlow Unit Private Patient Care - follows real patients through pre-operative assessment within the private unit, as well checking into the ward on the day of their surgery. It highlights the typical run through meeting with consultants and after care with the physio department. The Ludlow Unit benefits from being based at one of the country's leading specialist hospitals, which provides unique operating theatres with ultra clean air, contributing to its excellent reputation for consistently low infection rates. All clinicians at the Ludlow Unit in Oswestry specialise in musculo-skeletal conditions and are supported by orthopaedically trained nurses to provide the highest standards of care of patients.

The Oswestry Pain Management Programme is a residential programme which has been helping approximately 170 people every year since 1994. Supported by recent guidance from both the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and the British Pain Society, the courses offer a variety of activities including pilates, yoga and meditation alongside educational and practical sessions. The team has been led by Clinical Surgical Assistant Mrs Caroline Evans since 1998 and is part of the RJAH rehabilitation service. Specialism’s include physiotherapy, dietetics, psychology and pharmacy; all members of the team are experienced in the management of chronic pain based on the most up to date clinical evidence.

Day Case Surgery at the Menzies Unit - This five minute film follows patients from the reception lounge through to being discharged to show you our facilities. A number of patients give their views of their experience as a day surgery patient.
